Due to Skyrim & SKSE updates, there's a Trend: Failing to have the correct version of supporting mods for your version of Skyrim.
Does Toys&Love break when Skyrim/SKSE update? No. Toys&Love has no dll to break. The version of Toys&Love is not relevant for Skyrim/SKSE updates. The utilities that follow ARE.
Skyrim updates affect the following supporting utilities:
SKSE, Address Library, MFGFix, PapyrusUtil, JContainers, Racemenu, Faster HDT-SMP, Fuz Ro D-oh
These all have specific versions and you need the correct version
For Faster HDT-SMP and possibly others, you select the version in the installer
Listed above are those relevant for the Toys Family of mods. You might have others in your setup
Don't expect mod managers always to be able to tell you they are wrong, or not up-to-date. Don't expect loading the game to fail in all cases. Instead, you may have random hard-to-diagnose problems in-game.
Update: as of Oct 29/2022 - All SKSE based utilities required by Toys&Love have latest Steam AE (SKSE AE build 2.2.3 for game version 1.6.640) updates released now.
GOG version... I can't speak for, but for example, Faster HDT-SMP does not work with it, only Steam version, this could apply for others too. JContainers does not work unless you get it's GOG viersion from their GitHub.
Symptom for Faster HDT-SMP with wrong version: Plug type toys out of place, on the ground.
SOS is not a hard requirement for Toys Family mods so not listed above but we all need it. SOS Light SE works with the latest
